Week 3 Update- About Baby Smith
What's going on in your womb now? A lot. Your baby-in-the-making is just a tiny ball consisting of several hundred cells that are multiplying madly. Once the ball of cells (called a blastocyst) takes up residence in your uterus, the part of it that will develop into the placenta starts producing the pregnancy hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which tells your ovaries to stop releasing eggs and triggers increased production of estrogen and progesterone (which keep your uterus from shedding its lining — and its tiny passenger — and stimulates placental growth). HCG is the hormone that turns a pregnancy test positive; by the end of this week, you may be able to take one and get a positive result!
Meanwhile, amniotic fluid is beginning to collect around your ball of cells in the cavity that will become the amniotic sac. This fluid will cushion your baby in the weeks and months ahead. Right now, your little blastocyst is receiving oxygen and nutrients (and discarding waste products) through a primitive circulation system made up of microscopic tunnels that connect your developing baby to the blood vessels in your uterine wall. The placenta won't be developed enough to take over this task until the end of next week.
Week 3 Update- About Mama Smith
Baby Bump: None yet
Weight Gain: I don't know what I weigh currently since we're in Japan and don't have a scale, but I'm going to visit the local OBGYN office here in Toyota City next week to see if I can get a weight. If anything, I feel like I've stayed even or lost a pound or so since my appetite has decreased.
Maternity Clothes: None yet and I don't have any with me either. I meant to bring a pair of maternity jeans, but I forgot them.
Stretch Marks: Nope and hopefully they stay away, just like my first pregnancy.
Aches & Pains: Bad headaches, lower back pain, super tender boobs & still occasionally feel the let down feeling, and a tad upset to my stomach for about the first 2 hours I'm up in the morning, but then it goes away, thank God!
Sleep: I'm feeling very tired, but am having trouble falling asleep at night. Plus, every time I move around at night something wakes me up, mostly rolling around on my sore boobs.
Baby Movement: Way too soon yet
Food Cravings/Aversions: Nothing out of the ordinary just yet. The only strange thing I've eaten is mac and cheese and it's only strange because I wanted it at 10am. I made it and ate it and it was really good! Same aversion as last pregnancy, red meat...cooking it, not eating it. Ugh!
Gender: I have no feeling about it yet, but all the online gender predictors say girl. I'll be very happy with either!
Belly Button: Way in still.
What I Miss: Alcohol! I wanted just one more Mango Margarita while here in Japan. Dang it!
Looking Forward To: Telling our parents and friends back in the States and having the first Dr. appointment and ultrasound.
Energy Level: Normal to low
