Flash Back

We made it back to the United Stated from Japan safely!  We're really, really glad to be home and have everything around us that makes life in the U.S. so uncomplicated.   We were glad we had the opportunity to live in Japan, but are very happy to be back in our own home!

So, I've obviously been busy trying to get things back on schedule here and haven't had a chance to update things yet.  A few important things have happened though.  :)

* We had our first meal, Bdubs!!
* We had our first doctor appointment on Tuesday, the 21st and baby looks great!
* Carter had his 18m check up, a tad late,  and is growing like a weed and healthy as can be.

Now, to get ready for our trip to Ohio for Christmas.

No Clever Title For This One

Just another update on weight.  I know I've become obsessed with the whole weight thing, but I just want to make sure I'm gaining and not losing any more.

I weighed last Sunday when we went to the play place and I'd gained a little bit.  I was 59.20 kilograms, or 130.2 pounds.  That's a small gain of .24 pounds.  I'll take it!

Once we return home in just 2 days, I have no worries that I won't gain back every bit of the 12 pounds I've lost since we arrived here.  After Christmas, I'll be so sick of eating.  Haha!

On a side note...
I'm sorry I've been lacking in the picture department.  Because I've felt so crummy, I really haven't taken too many photos in recent weeks, unless we go on a trip somewhere.  I'll make sure I get some at the Nagoya airport before we leave.

Guidelines For The Unpregnant

I found this on The Bump message boards and thought it was funny, so I thought I would share it.  :)
I hope you find these guidelines helpful in your interactions with pregnant women as failing to follow them may result in serious physical harm. If you are thinking, surely she doesn't mean me- then you should probably read this twice.
1) The appropriate response to a couple telling you they are having a baby is 'Congratulations!' with enthusiasm. Any other response makes you an ass.

2) Through the wonders of science, we now know that babies are made ONLY by the mother and father- not grandparents. Unless the baby is in your uterus or you are the man that helped put it there, you may not ever use the phrase 'my baby'.
3) On the same note, unless you made the baby as defined in 2, the pregnancy, birth and raising of the child are not about you. You do not have input. No one wants to hear your opinion unless they ask for it. The same goes for the name of the baby.
 4) The body of a pregnant woman should be treated the same as any other body. You would not randomly touch someone's stomach if they were not pregnant, nor would you inquire into the condition of their uterus, cervix or how they plan to use their breasts. Pregnancy does not remove all traces of privacy from a woman.
 5) Likewise, no woman wants to hear comments on her weight- ever. A pregnant woman does not find it flattering that you think she is about is pop, must be having twins, looks swollen or has gained weight in her face. Telling her she looks too small only makes her worry that she is somehow starving her baby. Making such comments invite her to critique your physical appearance, and you may not act offended. The only acceptable comment on appearance is 'You look fabulous!'.
 6) By the time we are 20-30 years old, most of us have picked up on the fact that the summer is hot. We are hot every summer when we are not pregnant. We don't need you to point out that we will be miserably hot before the baby comes.
7) There is a reason that tickets to L&D are not yet sold on Ticketmaster. Childbirth is actually not a public event. It may sound crazy, but some women really do not relish the idea of their mother, MIL or a host of other family members seeing their bare butt and genitals. Also, some people simply feel like the birth of their child is a private and emotional moment to be shared only by the parents. Like everything else in life, unless you receive an invitation, you are NOT invited. This includes doctor appointments, ultrasounds, labor, delivery, the hospital and the parents home. You do not decide if you will be there for the birth or if you will move in with the new parents to 'help out'. If your assistance is desired, rest assured that you will be asked for it.
 8) If you are asked to help after the birth, this means you should clean up the house, help with cooking meals, and generally stay out of the way. Holding the baby more than the parents, interfering with breastfeeding and sleeping schedules and making a woman who is still leaking fluid from multiple locations lift a finger in housework is not helping.
9) The only people entitled to time with the baby are the parents. Whether they choose to have you at the hospital for the birth or ask for you to wait three weeks to visit, appreciate that you are being given the privilege of seeing their child. Complaining or showing disappointment only encourages the parents to include you less.
I hope this helps- it sure makes us feel better.

Belly from November 2nd-December 11th

Prenatal Vitamins and Water

I called my OB's office last night to speak with a nurse about my prenatal vitamin.  I asked if I could stop taking them now, before our long flight back, to see if it will help with me feeling so icky.  She said, "Absolutely."  She also suggested trying children's Flinstones chewable vitamins when we return.  So, because she sounded so upbeat about the whole idea, I don't feel weird or bad in not taking them for 6 days.

I'm also having a hard time drinking water and because I need to be drinking alot of it, for the pregnancy as a whole and to help with this silly constipation, I asked for alternatives to plain water.  She suggested flavored water.  I've never tried it before, but def will when we get home.  It's strange because I've never had an issue with drinking water before.  Hopefully things turn around once we're home and I can drink some good ole Kroger water.  :)

"Olive" Juice, or I Love You!

Week 9- All About Baby Smith

Your new resident is nearly an inch long —about the size of a grape — and weighs just a fraction of an ounce. She's starting to look more and more human. Her essential body parts are accounted for, though they'll go through plenty of fine-tuning in the coming months. Other changes abound: Your baby's heart finishes dividing into four chambers, and the valves start to form — as do her tiny teeth. The embryonic "tail" is completely gone. Your baby's organs, muscles, and nerves are kicking into gear. The external sex organs are there but won't be distinguishable as male or female for another few weeks. Her eyes are fully formed, but her eyelids are fused shut and won't open until 27 weeks. She has tiny earlobes, and her mouth, nose, and nostrils are more distinct. The placenta is developed enough now to take over most of the critical job of producing hormones. Now that your baby's basic physiology is in place, she's poised for rapid weight gain.

Week 9- All About Mama Smith

Baby Bump:  Still skeptical on this one, but they do say that you show sooner with a second pregnancy
Weight Gain:  Weighed again at Red Cross this past Thursday and I was 58.95 kilograms, or 129.96 pounds, so I gained .96 lbs in a week.
Maternity Clothes: My "big" jeans are starting to fit just right.
Stretch Marks:  Nope
Aches & Pains:  Things are pretty much the same as the last couple weeks.  Morning sickness is still around, as well as constipation, RLP, sore and growing boobs, slight headaches...and the list goes on.
Sleep:  It's been harder to fall asleep lately.  I don't know if it's because of the pregnancy or being excited to leave in a few days.  :)  I'm still having very weird dreams though.  Strangest one from last week was (it's kind of gross, so beware!) an Asian girl testing out sized dildos on me and telling me she was surprised how big my vagina was.  SICK!
Baby Movement:  I'm writing it down that I swear I felt a few movements a few different times today.  First on the subway to Nagoya, then again while shopping, and finally a few different times laying in bed tonight before sleep.  I know it sounds weird to say that I felt baby move at 9 weeks, but I was a freak of nature and felt Carter move at a very early 14 weeks, so it may just be.  It def felt like something "different" and not the usual gas bubbles.  If that's what it was, I'm excited and it makes me smile!
Food Cravings/Aversions:  Cravings: Everything American and from home, food and drink.  Aversions: Anything Japanese, foods and smells.
Gender:  Scott and I still tease about Baby Smith #2 being twins.  I still say girl and Scott now says 2 boys.  Geeze!
Belly Button:  In
What I Miss:  My cat, Brody, family & friends, and everything about home!
Looking Forward To:  6 days until we leave!!!
Energy Level:  All I want to do, all the time, is sleep!

Baby Bump Week 9
Am I crazy, or does this look a bit big for 9 weeks?  I didn't look anything like this until at least 17 weeks with Carter.

Up .96 & 7 Days!

I weighed myself again today at the Red Cross and I was 58.95 kilograms, or 129.96 pounds.  This is good because I was starting to get worried about losing more than 10 pounds in just a few weeks.

In just an hour and 15 minutes, we'll be leaving Japan in 7 days!  Wahoo!

I. Can't. Wait.

This Week? A "Raspberry"

Week 8- All About Baby Smith

New this week: Webbed fingers and toes are poking out from your baby's hands and feet, his eyelids practically cover his eyes, breathing tubes extend from his throat to the branches of his developing lungs, and his "tail" is just about gone. In his brain, nerve cells are branching out to connect with one another, forming primitive neural pathways. You may be daydreaming about your baby as one sex or the other, but the external genitals still haven't developed enough to reveal whether you're having a boy or a girl. Either way, your baby — about the size of a kidney bean — is constantly moving and shifting, though you still can't feel it.

Week 8- All About Mama Smith
Baby Bump:  I'm pretty sure it's just some bloat, but the other day I tried to suck everything in and it wouldn't budge, so who knows.
Weight Gain:  Weight loss actually.  I weighed myself at the Red Cross blood center for the first time on November 26th, 131 pounds.  I went back on Thursday, December 2nd, and was down 2 pounds, 129.
Maternity Clothes: Nothing right now, but I look forward to making the switch once we get home whether I need to or not.  Maternity jeans are sooooo comfy!!
Stretch Marks:  Nope
Aches & Pains:  The morning sickness is not as bad as it was from weeks 5- 7, but every now and again I still have a twinge of nausea.  It's better during the day and worse in the morning when first getting up and at night when we're in bed.  The new thing this week (last week) is constipation.  I've never in my life been constipated, but why not now?  You know, while I'm in another country that doesn't have any of the things a pregnant woman can take or eat so that I can have a good poop.  Ahhhhh, it's terrible!  My boobs are growing and are still sore, I've had a few headaches worth taking a Tylenol at bedtime for, my hips and ovaries are sore, and I've been very, very, very tired. In fact, that doesn't even come close to describing it.
Sleep:  Still having weird and sometimes scary dream that wake me in the night (just this weekend I lost Carter in a shopping mall and was reunited with him 3 years later and Tommy Lee Jones approached me in an aggressive manner on our airplane and said, "Spread your feet!"), but again, I'm able to fall back to sleep.
Baby Movement:  Nothing yet, but I look forward to the time when I feel like her foot is so far up in my ribs it's going to come out my nose.  :)
Food Cravings/Aversions:  THIS, again....I crave Mott's mixed berry and strawberry banana applesauce and Ocean Spray Cran Apple juice like something terrible!!!!  I have an aversion to most everything, especially Japanese grocery stores. OMG, it's really bad!
Gender:  I talked with Sarah Scadding this past week and she told me she thought Baby Smith is a girl.  I still say girl, but Scott is still sticking with boy.
Belly Button:  No change
What I Miss:  Home, and everything about the States!!!
Looking Forward To:  Everything about American food, including food that can un-constipate me!  12 days until we leave!
Energy Level:  All I want to do, all the time, is sleep!
